Police recovered the body of a young man found unconscious in an outdoor municipal swimming pool on Monday night in northeast Montreal.
C' is a call around 3:25 a.m. to the 911 emergency telephone exchange that led officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) to the swimming pool in Roger-Rousseau park, at the intersection of boulevard Châteauneuf and avenue Rondeau, in the district of Anjou.
On the spot, they fished out the body of a 21-year-old man and tried to resuscitate him while waiting for help to arrive. The victim was taken to hospital in seriously critical condition, the SPVM said.
The man and his girlfriend decided to cross the fence of the swimming pool to go swimming, when they could not swim, possibly in an inebriated state, according to the police investigating the accident.
Three other drownings occurred in Quebec in three days.
A teenage girl died on Friday after being found unconscious descending a waterslide from the Super Aqua Club in Pointe-Calumet, north of Montreal.
A 28-year-old man died by drowning on Saturday in the municipality of Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides.
Another 49-year-old man drowned Saturday night in the Batiscan River in Notre-Dame-de-Montauban. His body was recovered by divers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) on Sunday morning.
In addition, in Saint-Polycarpe, in Montérégie, an accident occurred following a jump rope at Sablon beach. The victim was in critical condition while being transported to hospital.
Monday is World Drowning Prevention Day.
