A 39-year-old man who was driving at high speed on highway 55, then on route 155 in Mauricie lost his life this morning in Grandes-Piles. The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) will take charge of the investigation, as the individual lost his life after being at the heart of a police pursuit.

A police officer was able to pick up the speed of the motorist in Shawinigan, which would then have been 192 km/h.
The officer began a pursuit, but the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) quickly decided, a few minutes later, to abandon the pursuit due to the high speed at which the individual was driving, indicates the Bureau of Independent Investigations.
Afterwards, at the roundabout in Grandes-Piles, the motorist allegedly lost control of his vehicle and swerved to death.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The man was alone in his vehicle, according to the SQ. The identity of the victim has not been released.
BEI investigators will attend the scene of the accident.
In accordance with the Regulation respecting the conduct of investigations of the Bureau of Independent Investigations, it is the Service de police de la Ville de Québec (SPVQ) which will act as a support police service, indicates the EIB in a press release.
