British intelligence: Russia increasingly buys weapons from countries under heavy sanctions

Russia is forced to buy weapons from Iran and North Korea, which are under heavy sanctions, as its own stocks are depleted. This is stated in the intelligence report of the UK Department of Defense.

«Russia, most likely, for the first time deployed Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine. On September 13, 2022, Ukrainian officials reported that their forces shot down a «Shahed-136» near Kupyansk, in the area of the ongoing successful offensive of Ukraine & # 187;, & # 8212; the report says.

Intelligence notes that the loss of said Iranian drone near the front lines suggests that there is a real possibility that Russia is trying to use this system to launch tactical strikes, and not on strategic targets in the depths of Ukrainian territory.

Shahed-136 is a single-sided strike UAV with a declared range of 2,500 kilometers. Similar Iranian-made systems were likely used in attacks in the Middle East, including against the oil tanker MT MERCER STREET in July 2021.
