British intelligence: RF likely considers counteroffensive on Kremennaya as a threat to its forces near Bakhmut

The city of Kremennaya in the Luhansk region remains one of the areas of the most violent confrontation in Ukraine. This is stated in the intelligence report of the British Department of Defense.

The agency indicates that the fighting continued “at the usual level” during the celebration of Christmas on the Julian calendar on January 7.

“Russian commanders will likely view the pressure around Kremennaya as a threat to the right flank of their Bakhmut sector, which they see as key to any future advance to occupy the rest of Donetsk Oblast,” the brief reads.

Intelligence notes that over the past three weeks, fighting around Kremennaya has been concentrated in the wooded area to the west of the city.

“Since the coniferous forest provides some cover from aerial surveillance even in winter, both sides are likely , cannot accurately correct artillery fire. As is typical for operations in the forests, most of the fighting is reduced to infantry clashes, often at short range,” the agency adds.

  • In early December 2022, the head of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Gaidai reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine «are slowly pushing through» defense of the Russian Federation in the direction of Svatovo-Kremennaya.
