Cédrika Provencher, 15 years later: “We really saw a before and after”

Cédrika Provencher, 15 years later :“We really saw a before and an after”

She was then nine years old. Today, she would be 24.

On July 31, 2007, Cédrika Provencher disappeared near a park in Trois-Rivières. 15 years later, how has this drama changed mentalities everywhere in Quebec?

She was nine years old then. Today, she would be 24. This is almost the same age as Oliver Dubé who went to the same school as Cédrika Provencher.

At the age we were… we were a little more naive. We were aware that at school they talked about it a lot, but we were more or less aware of the repercussions that it could have, says the one who is now a dad himself.

The repercussions, however, he quickly felt at the time, in his family life.

“With our parents, we really saw a before and after. We could no longer go and play alone in the parks, even in broad daylight, at lunchtime when there were a lot of parents. Our parents still had to be there, to have an eye on us. »

— Olivier Dubé

His spouse, Stéphanie Loubier Tardif, believes that the story of this little girl who was almost her age marked her own vision of security. Me, today, I do not trust anyone. This story is always in our head.

Today, July 31 is recognized as World Child Abduction Prevention Day, an initiative of the missing girl's grandfather, Henri Provencher, who launched the Cédrika Provencher Foundation to raise awareness Quebec to the cause.

“It's stories like Cédrika's that made us aware and that still follow us into adulthood with children”

— Élizabeth Forcier Bergeron

The mother of the family explains that her children have hours to return home in the evening and that she is always concerned when they are they go to the parks.

It is still not known who is responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Cédrika Provencher.

The girl's bones were found in 2015 in a wooded area near Highway 40 on the border between Trois-Rivières and Saint-Maurice.
