US officials said on Monday that the CIA had conducted a drone strike in Kabul on Sunday. According to US media citing sources who requested anonymity, Osama bin Laden's successor and al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri was killed in the operation.

US President Joe Biden is scheduled to address the press at 7:30 p.m. EDT. The White House announced that the address would focus on a successful counter-terrorism operation in Afghanistan.

The Taliban spokesman also said the United States conducted a drone strike on a residence in Kabul.

Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement that his government strongly condemned the operation. He called it a violation of international principles and the 2020 agreement on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
