Deputy head of the European Parliament: Ukraine cannot be hastily admitted to the EU
Deputy MEP Katarina Barly believes that hasty admission of Ukraine to the EU without undergoing the necessary institutional reforms can undermine the rule law. This was reported by Noz.de. Barley noted that Ukraine must go through the entire path of reforms in terms of the rule of law, a market economy and the fight against corruption. – We are now seeing this in the example Hungary, a country that systematically undermines the rule of law. The criteria set for accession, such as institutional stability, a functioning market economy and the rule of law, for example, must be fully met, she noted. At the same time, she is sure that all EU member states would like to smooth for Ukraine, the path to joining the European Union. At the same time, she noted that granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate could be a kind of signal for Russia. – This will be an important signal for Moscow that the EU will not be afraid when it comes to protecting our values,” Barley said. On June 17, the European Commission (EC) officially recommended that Ukraine be granted candidate status for membership in the European Union. The final decision will be made by the EU Council after 19 June. “Ukrainians are ready to die for the European perspective. We want them to live the European dream with us,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
