Former Kremlin prisoner Gennady Afanasiev died in Lugansk region

On Crimean citizen, civil activist and former political prisoner of the Kremlin Gennady Afanasyev died in the war against the Russian occupiers. This was reported by Radio Liberty.

Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, People's Deputy of Ukraine Akhtem Chiygoz told the publication that Gennady Afanasyev fought in the 130th battalion of the TRO of the 241st brigade. Ukrainian defender with callsign «Tor» died in the Luhansk region near Belogorivka.

In turn, the mother of the hero, Lyudmila Afanasyev, wrote on Facebook that the command did not inform her about the death of her son.

  • Gennady Afanasyev was detained after the annexation of Crimea in May 2014. The Russian secret services accused him of planning to blow up the monument to Lenin on Vokzalnaya Square and the Eternal Flame memorial together with Oleg Sentsov, Alexei Cherniy and Alexander Kolchenko.
  • In July 2015, at the trial of Sentsov, Afanasiev retracted his testimony, saying that they were made under torture.
  • The Crimean was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Afanasyev was pardoned by Vladimir Putin. On June 14, 2016, Ukraine and Russia exchanged prisoners according to the formula «two by two». Moscow handed over Gennady Afanasiev and Yuri Soloshenko to Kyiv, while Ukraine handed over two journalists from Odessa, Elena Glishchinskaya and Vitaly Didenko.
  • Gennady Afanasyev went to war from the first days of the full-scale invasion of the Russian invaders.
