Haïti: clashes between gangs in downtown Port-au-Prince

On July 13, rioters demonstrated against rising prices and shortages.

Violent clashes erupted in the streets of downtown on Wednesday of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.

A video filmed in the city center of the capital shows men running towards the police with their hands in the air, as gunshots ring out.

The cathedral in Port-au-Prince was partially destroyed by a fire, which authorities suspect is linked to the violates nces between gangs.

Prisoners of a penitentiary located in the city center escaped from their cells, before trying unsuccessfully to escape from the prison, the director of the Haitian prison administration, Pierre René François, announced on the radio.

Shots were also heard in Cité Soleil, where, according to the United Nations, more than 471 people were killed, injured or missing during violence earlier this month.

Haitian gangs have grown in power since the president's assassination Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
