Macron in Kyiv explained calls to Putin and claims of territorial concessions

French leader Emmanuel Macron retracted a number of his controversial statements after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Germany and France will no longer demand concessions from Ukraine. Macron said this at a press conference in Kyiv.

– We stand side by side with Ukraine in defense of sovereignty and territorial integrity. This is our goal, we have no other goal and we will achieve it. Ukraine will decide on what terms to negotiate peace. Germany and France will not demand concessions from Ukraine, Macron said.

At the same time, the French president believes that it is necessary to have a working channel of communication with Russia, at least on food security issues. That is why he called Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone and each time received approval from Zelensky.

– At the moment, these negotiations do not bring any concrete result, but perhaps the moment for the success of these negotiations may come in the future. Ukraine must win the war, preserving its territorial integrity and sovereignty, but then you still have to talk with the Russians, Macron believes.

Also, the French leader called on Russia to end the blockade of Ukrainian ports. He stressed that the prolonged crisis is the result of Russia's actions, and not of European sanctions.
