
Man shot by police officer in Shamattawa First Nation dead
The Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit is investigating the incident.
A 22-year-old man shot by a police officer in Shamattawa First Nation on July 2 has succumbed to his injuries, according to the Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit (IIU).
A statement from the UEI says it learned of the man's death on July 9.
RCMP say officers responded to a call regarding a man with a firearm in the community July 2.
Officers patrolled the area and heard gunshots.
They spotted a suspect in outside a home and following interaction between the suspect and officers, shots were fired, RCMP say.
The suspect was seriously injured and taken to the community infirmary before being transported to Winnipeg. Shamattawa is located approximately 745 km northwest of Winnipeg.
Before the man's death, indigenous leaders had expressed outrage at the incident.
