Man shot by police in east Toronto

Three police officers shot the man, SIU says.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a man during a Saturday afternoon police action in east Toronto.

Police had received a call about a woman who had been seriously injured.

A 42-year-old man was armed with a knife and grabbed a child before entering the house.

According to police spokeswoman Stephanie Sayer said the suspect was still inside with the child. nt when the police arrived on the scene.

She says that the officers shot the man during their contact with him, but that the child did not was injured.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), three officers shot the man, who was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead a just under an hour later. An autopsy is due to take place on Sunday.

The woman who was stabbed has serious injuries but is hospitalized in stable condition, police say.

The SIU investigates when civilians are killed or seriously injured during contact with police officers or when there are allegations of sexual assault against an officer.
