Colonel-General Alexander Lapin was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Land Forces of the Russian Armed Forces. This is reported by RBC with reference to a source in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Since 2017, Lapin has commanded the Central Military District of the Russian Federation. Until the end of October 2022, he also served as commander of the Center group of troops, which captured the Luhansk region. In November, it became known that General Alexander Linkov was appointed interim commander of the Central Military District.

In early October 2022, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, accused Lapin of surrendering Liman and called him “a mediocrity.” According to Kadyrov, Lapin, while leading this sector of defense, did not provide the necessary means for the mobilized occupiers from the Lugansk region, and he himself “sat out” in Luhansk.

In addition, Lapin was criticized more than once by the founder of the terrorist PMC “Wagner” Evgeny Prigozhin.
