Broken Muslim family: Trial will not take place in London | London attack

The individual is accused of having decimated a Muslim family in the southwestern Ontario community.

The trial of Nathaniel Veltman, who is charged in connection with the 2021 vehicle ramming attack, will take place outside the City of London, a an Ontario Superior Court judge decided after a brief hearing on Monday afternoon.

Nathaniel Veltman faces terrorism charges and 5 additional premeditated murder and attempted murder charges in the deaths of four family members. Only the little boy had survived the attack of June 6, 2021.

Judge Renee Pomerance of the Ontario Superior Court decided to move the jury trial. His reasons are subject to a publication ban until the day of the verdict.

A trial may be moved if :

  • the thing seems useful for the purposes of justice, in particular:

    • (i) to promote a fair and efficient trial,

    • (ii) to ensure the safety of victims and witnesses or to protect their interests and those of the community;

  • (b) a competent authority has ordered that a jury not be summoned at the time fixed in a territorial division where the trial would otherwise take place, under the law.

The defense motion for Nathaniel Veltman to hold the trial in a location other than London was heard earlier this year.

Nathaniel Veltman attended the hearing in Elgin-Middlesex Detention Center, where he has been held since his arrest days after the attack.

The young man appeared in his orange prisoner outfit , his face shaved and a COVID-19 mask dangling from one ear. He did not speak.

The Crown has already chosen the location. x27;last winter to stay the preliminary inquiry and proceed summarily directly to trial.

Nathaniel Veltman will be due back in court in London on September 12 for the subsequent legal proceedings. Both sides still have other pre-trial motions to present to the court.

A first publication ban prevents us from saying more in this case.
