The national premiere of the second Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA2) film “everything blooms at the same time” will take place at the Riga International Film Festival on October 17.
Due to the rapid spread of Covid-19, in March 2020, preparations for the second Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art were suspended. Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, the curator of the exhibition, decided to “freeze” the unfinished biennial and to Make a Feature Film |. The script of the film “Everything Blooms at the Same Time” is created in connection with the idea of the exhibition – the need to rethink how humanity lives on the planet.
The idea of the Biennale “everything blooms at once” was based on the desire to find alternative perspectives on humanity’s obsession with growth, expansion and consumption, seeking answers to questions about how to build a conscious and inclusive relationship with the world at risk. Forty-six artists from all over the world met in Andrejsala to bring together the vision of Rebekah Lamarsha-Vadela, the main curator of the Biennale, and offer their answers. The exhibition was both threatened by the pandemic and created because, in March 2020, just a few weeks before its opening, preparations for the rapid spread of Covid-19 were halted.
When in August succeeded open to biennial visitors, the film was shot in three weeks.
Since I started working on the exhibition, my idea has been based on renewal – not a desire for a “different world”, but a new and constructive relationship in the endangered world we have. When the pandemic broke out and we realized that the original plan would not succeed, we had no choice but to create in accordance with the new situation. The semi-finished exhibition, the missing works of art, the unfinished scenography, the transformation of the exhibition in the film’s shooting area and the film itself are the fruits of the biennial. It was a very intense experience, which, despite all the difficulties, opened up new perspectives for us, giving us the opportunity to create a film that resonates and resonates with today’s challenges and the need not to hesitate and go in search of new paths, ”said RIBOCA2 director and screenwriter Rebecca Lamarsha-Vadel.
Rebecca Lamarsha-Vadela invited internationally acclaimed director Dāvis Sīmanis and his team, including Andrejs Rudzāts, who is the lead cinematographer of the film, as co-directors. The soundtrack was created by singer and songwriter LAFAWNDAH, whose voice guides the audience in the story of the film.
The national premiere of the film will take place on October 17 at 17.00 in the cinema “Splendid Palace”, in the program of the Riga International Film Festival. The film is in English, but RIGA IFF will be able to watch it with subtitles in Latvian and Russian.
In the autumn, the film “Everything Blooms at the Same Time” will also be screened in London, Berlin, Basel, Paris and Moscow. It is included in the film program of The Art Newspaper Russia Film Festival and Art Basel Art Fair. The film will have its digital world premiere at the end of November.
The production of the film was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the State Cultural Capital Fund. International premieres are supported by the Baltic Cultural Foundation in the project “The Parcours of the Blossoming”, implemented together with the “Temnikova & Kassel” gallery (Estonia) and the art, education and residence center “Rupert” (Lithuania).
