A quarter of murder victims in Canada between 2015 and 2020 were Indigenous, according to data released by Statistics Canada this week. Saskatchewan is the province with the highest Aboriginal homicide rate.

The rate for this province is 17.57 homicides per 100,000 Aboriginal people, 13 times higher than the rate for non-Aboriginal people.

In contrast, the province's non-Indigenous homicide rate of 1.38 homicides per 100,000 non-Indigenous people is within the national average.

Of the 244 homicides police have documented in Saskatchewan, 173 are Indigenous victims, Statistics Canada said.

The three Prairie provinces recorded 1,077 murders, with 545 Indigenous victims. Thus, more than 30% of reported homicides in the country occurred in these three provinces.

The higher homicide rates among Aboriginal people also contribute to the relatively high homicide rates generally recorded in [the Prairies]. For example, Manitoba and Saskatchewan had homicide rates more than twice the rate for all of Canada in 2020, the federal agency's report notes.

A total of 822 Indigenous people were killed out of a total of 3,373 homicide victims reported by police services in Canada in 2015 and 2020. According to Statistics Canada, 69% of Indigenous homicide victims were First Nations, 5.8% of victims were M├ętis, and 6.7% were Inuit.

Among Aboriginal people, homicides are most often perpetrated by a friend or family friend, or an extended family member. In contrast, homicides involving an Aboriginal victim are less often committed with a firearm, and less often premeditated.

Homicide rates among Aboriginal people were lowest in the Atlantic provinces, with 13 victims out of a total of 178 murders reported in these four provinces.

Prince Edward Island is the only province that did not have an Indigenous homicide victim during the period from 2015 to 2020, reveals Statistics Canada.
