Scholz: Germany broke the tradition and will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine

Germany will continue to provide weapons to Ukraine. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a press conference in Kyiv after a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky.

– Germany has long broken its state tradition: we began to provide weapons to Ukraine. And we will continue to do this as far as Ukraine needs,” Scholz said.

Germany has been providing financial assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the war in 2014, helping to treat wounded Ukrainian servicemen, but refusing to provide weapons. In 2021, Berlin blocked arms supplies to Ukraine through NATO when the US warned of a possible new Russian invasion.

After the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Germany changed its position and agreed to supply weapons. However, Ukraine has repeatedly stated that the weapons provided by Germany are not enough. Germany sent light weapons to Ukraine, in particular, Stinger MANPADS, mines, grenades, machine guns, trucks and armored vehicles, but heavy weapons were never delivered. At the end of June, the first deliveries of heavy weapons from Germany are expected.
