Sovgirya: Tymoshenko appeals the ratification of the Istanbul Convention to the Constitutional Court

Yulia Tymoshenko threatened to appeal the ratification of the Istanbul Convention to the Constitutional Court. This was announced on June 21 by the representative of the Verkhovna Rada in the Constitutional Court Olga Sovgirya.

– Today, during the plenary session, the leader of the Batkivshchyna faction announced that the Istanbul Convention would be appealed by people's deputies to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. Let's see if there are 45 people's deputies who do not support the European future of Ukraine, – the people's deputy from the Servant of the People faction wrote on her Facebook.

At the same time, on Tuesday, First Lady Olena Zelenska called the ratification of the Istanbul Convention a huge victory and a historic event.

– In fact, the Istanbul Convention is like joining the EU in the fight against violence. And this will help Ukraine with the actual accession to the European Union,” she wrote in her Telegram channel.

The President's wife noted that the convention sets a high bar for assistance to victims and ways to prevent violence. For example, teaching equality from school, “since it is gender stereotypes that make violence acceptable.”

On June 20, the Verkhovna Rada ratified the Istanbul Convention. The faction “Fatherland” did not give a single vote. Yulia Tymoshenko stated that the convention imposes values uncharacteristic of Ukrainian society and introduces the concept of gender. In her opinion, when raising children, it will no longer be necessary to rely on their physiological gender. According to the People's Deputy, the issue should be submitted to a national referendum. Tymoshenko also said that the Istanbul Convention is not included in the package of requirements that the EU provides in order to give Ukraine a candidacy.

Head of the Servant of the People party, Olena Shulyak, in turn, said that upon ratification, Ukraine makes a special statement that the Convention will be applied in accordance with the norms and principles of the Constitution of Ukraine and does not oblige amendments to the Constitution or Family Code regarding women and men, family values, marriage, family and adoption.

President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the people's deputies who supported the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
