The choice for the American actor is remarkable, according to critics, given his ongoing legal battle with ex-partner Amber Heard, who has accused him of assault. The Spanish Association of Women Filmmakers accuses the Spanish film festival of honoring a man accused of abuse.
According to the filmmakers, it sends the wrong message to the public. “It doesn’t matter if you’re an abuser, as long as you’re a good actor,” president Cristina Andreu told the Associated Press.
The film festival says it is not their role “to judge the behavior of members of the film industry”. Festival director José Luis Rebordinos therefore remains behind the choice for Depp, describing him as ‘a great actor’ and ‘a man of cinema with a great career’.
The Spanish film festival announced on Monday that it would honor Depp with the highest award for his oeuvre. He will receive the award, the Donastia Award, at the San Sebastian Film Festival next month.
