Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin's nomination to the Supreme Court is confirmed

< p class="sc-v64krj-0 knjbxw">Lawyer Michelle O'Bonsawin is an Abenaki member of the Odanak First Nation.

Chief Justice of Canada welcomes appointment of the first Indigenous justice on the Supreme Court of Canada.

In a statement Friday, Richard Wagner says Michelle O'Bonsawin has proven herself to be principled, to be genuine and hardworking throughout her career as a lawyer and judge.

Ms. O'Bonsawin, who replaces outgoing judge Michael Moldaver, is a fully bilingual Franco-Ontarian and Abenaki member of the Odanak First Nation, located at the #x27;east of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nominated Justice O'Bonsawin earlier this month and on Friday confirmed her appointment to the nation's highest court effective September 1.

She will be sworn in the same day in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court. An official welcoming ceremony will be held in November.
