Santa Teresa d’Avila – .

“The flame that Jesus lit in Teresa continues to shine in this world that is always in need of courageous witnesses, capable of breaking down any wall, be it physical, existential or cultural”. It is one of the key steps with which Pope F.rancesco outlines the greatness of the Spanish mystic Teresa of Avila (1515-1582). Pope Bergoglio’s letter addressed to the current bishop of Avila, Gil Tamayo, was written in 2020 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary (1970-2020) of the awarding of the doctorate to Santa Teresa d’Avila by Paul VI.

The novelty of this “unpublished” text by the Pontiff dedicated to the reformer of Carmel was reported on April 13 last year on the site Vatican News. In the text, the Pope emphasizes that “Her courage, her intelligence, her tenacity, to which she has combined a sensitivity for beauty and a spiritual motherhood towards all those who have approached her work, they are an exemplary example of the extraordinary role that women have played in the course of history in the Church and in society ”.

In the letter, Francis recalls the importance of the nun who became famous for her spiritual masterpiece, the book “Inner Castle” (1577), which was also a model for the mysticism of Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises. “Having her as a friend, companion and guide on our earthly pilgrimage – is the Pope’s indication – confers security and tranquility”. To this important figure, the Catholic University of Avila is dedicating an international congress entitled “Exceptional woman”, as Pope Montini defined her, which will run until April 15.
