Bodies of 2 construction workers found at construction site in Ontario

Durham Regional Police say the bodies of two workers were found at a construction site in Ajax at 2.30am on Tuesday. Two other people were taken to hospital on Monday.

The bodies of two workers were found dead after a trench collapsed at a construction site in Ajax on Monday, according to Durham Regional Police.

Police say the bodies of the two men were found around 2:30 a.m. Monday night. The rescue teams had been busy at work for several hours at the time.

Police received a call around noon on Monday informing them of a work accident on Rossland Road West, near Westney Road North. Two workers became stranded after a trench collapsed at a construction site.

An earlier version of this text briefly stated that workers had were found alive. It was quickly corrected.

A hydraulic excavator worked for hours Monday, day and night, in an attempt to free the two workers. Family members were at the scene Monday evening to assist in the rescue operations.

Two other workers were injured in the accident. One was transported to a local hospital, while another was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, police say.

< p class="e-p">The Ontario Ministry of Labor is on site Tuesday to investigate the causes of the accident.

Police have reopened access to the West Rossland Road between North Westney Road and Ravenscroft Road.
