The head of the European Commission: Ukraine should receive the status of an EU candidate, this is a historic decision
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukraine should receive the status of a candidate for joining the EU, and this is quite justified. The country has done a great job in eight years, the decision of the European Commission is historic. This is reported by the German TV channel ARD. Von der Leyen said that the decision of the European Commission to grant Ukraine candidate status is based on data, facts and preparatory work, which the country has done in 8 eight years. – I firmly believe that we will get a positive decision of the European Council, we will get support, the course has now been set. Of course, this is a historic decision that the European Council must now also take, but the preparations are going well. Ukraine has made huge strides forward, she said. At the same time, Von der Leyen specified that the EU “wants to see even more reforms.” At the same time, the head of the EC noted that it depends on the applicant country itself whether admission to the community will be successful and how soon this will happen. – In these states, everything depends on how quickly this process goes, and they must carry out the necessary reforms, they must prove that they are in line with the European Union. Then the process goes faster, it's not quite a tough process, – summed up von der Leyen. As an example, she cited Turkey and Slovakia, which in 1999 were given prospects for joining the EU. Slovakia worked hard and in 2004 became a member of the EU. On the other hand, Turkey is further away from the EU than it was then. Earlier, Ursula von der Leyen wore a yellow jacket and a blue shirt when announcing her recommendation to grant Ukraine candidate status for EU membership. It is symbolic that the head of the EC chose clothes in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
