Indonesian media have revealed that the nickname “Jokowi” was given to the future president by a Frenchman who was his client when Joko Widodo was a businessman selling furniture. A foreigner named Bernard contacted several people named Joko in Indonesia and suggested that Widodo add the particle “vi” from the surname to the name in order to stand out among them.

The reforms carried out significantly strengthened the reputation of the city not only at the national, but also at the regional level. In 2012, he received the 3rd Class World Mayor's Award for “transforming a crime-ridden city into a regional center of culture and arts and a tourist attraction.”
