Ukraine expects decision on EU candidate status in coming weeks

Ukraine is waiting for a decision on the EU candidate status in the coming weeks

President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda the issue of granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine to join the block. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in an evening address.

– We discussed with Andrzej (Duda – ed.) the issue of the status of a candidate for Ukraine, this is a key political issue right now. We are expecting a decision from the European Union regarding our application for candidacy in the coming weeks. I believe that this will be a decision not only about Ukraine, but also about the entire European project. About whether it has a future as a really strong association, the president said.

According to him, the parties also raised issues of defense support for Ukraine. The head of state thanked the President of Poland for making quick decisions in this area.

Questionnaire for obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership was handed over to Ukraine by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Kyiv in early April. After filling out the questionnaire, Ukraine will wait for a corresponding recommendation from the European Commission on whether Kyiv meets the necessary criteria. In case of a positive answer, our country will receive the status of a candidate for joining the bloc, after which negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU should begin.
