
Washington announces new arms sales to Taiwan for $1.1 billion
Taiwanese army maneuvers last August after the Chinese maneuvers around the island
The The United States announced on Friday a new round of arms sales to Taiwan, for a total of 1.1 billion dollars, as tensions are at their highest with China, which considers the island a part of its territory.
The US government has approved the sale to Taipei of 60 Harpoon missiles for $355 million, 100 Sidewinder tactical missiles ($85.6 million) and a maintenance contract Taiwan's $665 million radar system, the State Department said in a statement.
China has demanded that Washington cancel the new sale of weapons.
