Zelensky signs scandalous law toughening liability for military personnel

President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the controversial bill 8271, which increases the criminal liability of the military for failure to comply with combat orders, escape from the battlefield or military unit. This is stated on the website of the parliament.

Bill 8271 was voted in the Rada on December 13 and sent for signature to the president. He was supported by all political forces, except «Golos». As of January 24, the law was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada signed by the President.

According to the adopted law, the courts will be prohibited from mitigating punishment or giving suspended sentences for military men convicted of certain types of crimes:

    < li>Disobedience (Art. 402)
  • Disobedience to an order (Art. 403)
  • Threats or violence against a superior (Art. 405)
  • Unauthorized abandonment of military parts (art. 407)
  • desertion (art. 408)
  • unauthorized abandonment of the battlefield (art. 429)

The document also proposes to provide the powers of the Military Law Enforcement Service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine to carry out inspections by authorized officials of military personnel, conscripts and reservists during training for the state of alcoholic, narcotic or other intoxication using technical means and tests.

Chesno movement analyst Viktoria Oleinik draws attention to the fact that now the judges will not take into account all the circumstances of the case when they issue a sentence War Crimes Clerk — all the military will receive real and long terms.
